Wine Tasting

Wine Tasting

To start the Picked by the Pros evening, guests will have the opportunity to taste dozens of fine wines hand selected by local distributors working closely with Jeff Armstrong, owner of WineTime. At this tasting, you won't find the usual suspects or run-of-the-mill wines. Each table will be stocked with premium wines, though not all will come with a premium price tag.

There are many ways to approach a wine tasting. The first step is to take a deep breath, acknowledge that you cannot (and, really, should not) taste every wine available. For the wine tasting portion of the event, you will receive a "wine journal" that will help you track the wines you sampled and those you skipped. This will help you later on when you want to order wines.

Before hitting the tables, think about what you want to learn during the tasting. After all, that's what the tasting is all about - learning which wines you like and which you don't like. Here are a few strategies:

  • Do the opposite. If you're usually a white wine drinker, consider sampling only red wines during the tasting.
  • Be adventurous. Try wines you have never before heard of or seen on store shelves.
  • Pick one grape. For instance, if you like Pinot Noir (or if you want to like Pinot Noir because it sounds cool), try all the Pinot Noir offered.
  • Pick a region. France, Italy, South America, California - pick one and stick with it.
  • Find your favorites. Visit the tables and sample what strikes your fancy.

And if you try something and don't like it, dump the rest out and move on. No hard feelings.

Whatever route you choose, please remember to choose wisely and drink responsibly.

The Sixth Annual Picked by the Pros Wine Pairing Dinner

As a public radio listener, we know you thirst for knowledge. You hunger for information about the world around you. You crave the company of those who share your passion for the arts. There is no better place to quench your thirst, feed your soul and celebrate your local public radio stations - WBOI/WBNI - than at the 6th Annual Picked by the Pros Wine Tasting Dinner.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with a wine-tasting hosted by WineTime, a local wine store focused on providingquality wines from around the world at a wide range of price points from affordable to exclusive. Owner Jeff Armstrong hand picks each wine he sells and provides pairing suggestions and tasting notes for every bottle.

During the pre-dinner wine tasting, you will have an opportunity to taste a variety of wines selected specifically for the WBOI/WBNI event. All wines are available for purchase on order from WineTime.

The six-course dinner begins with an appetizer, progresses through a salad, soup, pasta and entrée and ends with dessert - all prepared by Ceruti's Catering, which provides catering services at the historic Bergstaff Place.

Each course is paired with a wine specifically selected to match the food. There's a reason wine lovers rave about food and wine pairings. It's not always easy to find that perfect match, but when it comes together, it's magical. Dan and Krista Stockman, owners of Cheers! Wine Consultants, will lead diners through each course, sharing tasting tips and expert advice on pairing wine and food.

The event also includes both a live and silent auction focused on wine and wine-related items. Live auction items include an Instant Wine Cellar with at least a dozen bottles of wine to kick-start your home wine cellar as well as a package to recreate the Picked by Pros dinner at your house. The evening includes working with Dan and Krista to set your menu and pick your wines before the event and lead an in-home wine-tasting at your residence.

Your Attendance Matters

A message from our President and General Manager, Peter Dominowski

The Picked by the Pros Wine Pairing Dinner is the major fundraising event which supports public radio in our community.

All of the proceeds of the event support programming on 89.1 WBOI and Classical 94.1 WBNI.

The success of this event is a crucial portion of the 90% of our funding that comes directly from the communities which we serve.

Thanks to community support, we’ve recently added more popular NPR news and entertainment programs, increased our community arts and cultural reporting, upgraded our classical music service, and are in the process of expanding the 89.1 WBOI news team.

It is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy good food, good wine, conversations with old friends and to make some new ones, all while helping to make possible the public radio programing that 89.1 WBOI and Classical 94.1 WBNI provide to the community every day.

I will look forward to seeing you there!

Peter
